Fun Family Weekend Getaways in Asheville NC

For a fun family weekend getaway, Asheville, NC is a great city to visit. Asheville is like your cool uncle who plays the bongo drums and lives next to your rich refined grandma.  He has an awesome craft brewery in his backyard where everyone likes to hang out.  History, culture, nature, and beer intersect to provide unique experiences for everyone.  Here is your guide for things to do on your Asheville NC family vacations.

location and directions

Asheville is located in Western North Carolina, set in the sloping Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia.  It is an hour and a half from Greenville, SC, two hours from Knoxville, TN, and two hours from Charlotte, NC, which makes it a perfect family weekend getaway in North Carolina.  Asheville is also a short trip away from the Great Smokey Mountains.

The domestic airport in Asheville flies several major airlines including American Airlines, Delta, and United, and some smaller airlines such as Allegiant, Jet Blue, and Sun Country airlines.

history and fun facts

Pre-Colonial history shows that present-day Asheville and the surrounding area were home to the Cherokee nation.  Many Native American trading routes crisscrossed the land for hundreds of years.  During the Revolutionary War, the Cherokee sided with the British to discourage new settlers from moving into the area.  After the Revolution, these lands were seized and the Cherokee were forced to relocate during the time of the Trail of Tears.

In 1785, Colonel Samuel Davidson was granted land in the Swannanoa Valley to create settlements.  These were outpost communities in the frontier land that were frequented by famous pioneers such as Davy Crocket and Daniel Boone.  Morristown was established by John Burton in 1792 and would be renamed Asheville in 1797 to honor North Carolina governor Samuel Ashe.

Entering the 19th century, Asheville had a population of 38 in 1800.  The town continued to grow and the Civil War had little effect on the people.  The only skirmish was Stoneman’s Raid in 1865, which lasted 5 hours.  It was after the Civil War when Asheville started to really take off with the railroad coming to town.  In 1880, Asheville had created a name for itself as a health and wellness center, and mountain escape for the wealthy.  This was also the time when the first African American settlement of Shiloh was established.  By 1890, Asheville had a population of 10,000 and on Christmas Eve, 1895, the Biltmore Estate was completed making George W Vanderbilt’s new home the largest in America.

The 1900s was a century of ups and downs for Asheville.  American author, Thomas Wolfe was born on October 3, 1900.  The local landmark, Grove Park Inn opened in 1913 and has hosted 10 presidents over the years!  Tragedy struck in 1916, when massive storms brought 22 inches of rain in 24 hours, flooding the town and causing 80 deaths.

The 1920s saw Asheville grow and expand.  The city flourished with the construction of iconic Art Deco architecture and many building projects such as the Grove Arcade and the first college in Asheville.  All this development came to a halt during the Great Depression of the 1930s.  Asheville had massive debts that took 50 years to pay off.  This effectually froze the city in time, preserving the architecture of the Roaring Twenties.  But the Great Depression didn’t stop projects completely.  In 1934 the Great Smokey Mountain National Park was created in Tennessee and in 1935 the Blue Ridge Parkway came through Asheville, connecting the Great Smokey Mountain National Park to the Shenandoah National Park.

During the later part of the century, in the 1970s, Asheville paid off its debts from the Great Depression and started to rejuvenate.  Music, art, culture, and food flourished and established Asheville as a center for tourism.  In 1994 the Highland Brewing Company opened and today there are 30+ craft breweries around Asheville.  Preservation, restoration, and revitalization have made Asheville an exciting place to visit and an ideal family vacation spot in North Carolina.

seasons and weather: when to visit Asheville

  • Summer: Summer is the time for all things outdoors.  With highs in the mid-80s, Asheville’s heat is balmy but not oppressive.   Although it can feel hot and humid in town, head to the mountains to find relief in the shade of the forest and the higher elevations.  Pack bug spray, there are mosquitos in Asheville and the western North Carolina area.  During the rainy summer months, mosquitos thrive in stagnant water areas, which can be found on hiking trails around the Asheville area.
  • Fall: Fall is the peak tourist season for Asheville for good reason.  The beautiful fall foliage takes place in October.  With comfortably cool temperatures from highs in the upper 60s and lows in the lower 50s, it’s the perfect time to hike, take a scenic drive, or horseback through the mountains.  Sweaters, jeans, and boots are what you should wear during a fall weekend in Asheville to be super comfortable.
  • Winter: The average winter temperature in Asheville is around 45 degrees, but highs can get into the 50s and lows can reach into the 20s.  Asheville does see snow, about 11 inches, but it doesn’t stick around for very long even in the coldest month of January.  Visitors can still enjoy much that Asheville has to offer with a heavy coat and good shoes.
  • Spring: Springtime is a spectacular time in Asheville.  Make sure to enjoy the bountiful flowers at the many gardens and parks around the area.  Temperatures are similar to that of fall, with highs rising from the 50s in March to the 70s in May.  Pack a raincoat and umbrella during Asheville’s wettest month: March.

In Town

Urban Trail: The Asheville Urban Trail consists of 30 statues or buildings around the downtown area that help visitors understand the history, architecture, and culture of the city.  The Asheville Urban Trail website has interactive maps, an audio tour, and videos to allow you to take a walking tour at your own pace.  There is a scavenger hunt that you can print off for the kids (or yourself), and for teachers or homeschool families (like me) there are more resources to extend the learning.  Start at Asheville’s Pack Square and find the #1 plaque to begin the 1.7-mile “Walk through History.”  Or you can pick up wherever you are.  I think we started with #9 because that was nearest to our car park.  Each statue is unique and playful.  Children will have fun petting the bronze big, trying to put their feet in Thomas Wolfe’s shoes, or getting a drink with the girl at the fountain. This is a great free activity for families, one, because, well, it’s free, who doesn’t love that?  And two, you can take it at your own pace.  Stop off at the library, the shops, or Malaprop’s bookstoreYou can grab a snack or picnic in one of the parks.

LaZoom Comedy bus: Want a little more guidance and a lot more laughs?  LaZoom Comedy bus is the tour for you.  How fun for kids does the Lil Boogers kids’ comedy bus sound?  Available on the weekends only, this 1-hour tour promises to have you in stitches with hilarious comedy acts geared toward ages 6-12, and you will learn something about the city of Asheville in the process.  Moms and dads, they also have grown-up bus tours as well as a Comedy Club and Beer Bar, so maybe bring grandma along with you on your family trip to Asheville and enjoy a date night out?

Other ways to explore the city: Want something a little more personal?  Here are some other fun tours to see Asheville with kids:

  • Asheville Night-Time Walking Ghost Tour This spooky excursion takes you through Asheville’s haunted streets and shares its ghoulish tales.  If your family likes the strange and supernatural, give this tour a try.
  • Asheville Historic Downtown Guided Electric Bike Tour with Scenic Views– A bike tour in the mountains might sound too intense for kids (or me), but electric bikes help you conquer the hills and see downtown Asheville.  This 2.5-hour guided tour gives you information about the history of the city and a local’s recommendations for the best places to eat and experience.  Children must be 16+ years old to ride an electric bike independently, but younger kids can ride a cargo bike or in a child seat.

**Bike Tours are an awesome way to explore on your next vacation.  Need more reasons why?  Check out Why City Bike Tours for Families are Great.  I highly recommend them.**

  • 2-Hour Guided Segway Tour of Asheville– If you have older kiddos (10+) then try out a segway tour.  Segways can be so fun, especially for kids.  On this guided tour of Asheville, you will zip through the streets and learn about the history and culture of Asheville, the “Paris of the South.”

Asheville Botanical Gardens: In the 1960s, the Asheville-Biltmore College Botanical Association was formed and began developing the 10 acres next to the University of North Carolina at Asheville with native plants to persevere and protect the local species from urbanization.  Today guests can enjoy the gardens and wildlife.  This is a free kid activity in Asheville and free parking, but donations are appreciated.  Mid-April to mid-August is the peak time to experience the flowers in full bloom.  My family visited in October and there were still some flowers blooming, but the changing of the leaves was the real show-stopper.

WNC Nature Center: The WNC Nature Center is a place where guests can learn more about the animals native to Asheville and the southern Appalachia area.  The Nature Center is home to fun animals such as black bears, mountain lions, and river otters.  There are also educational talks and programs that are available at different times throughout the day.  This is a great way for families to learn more about the local habitats and ecosystems.  To extend the learning the Nature Center offers activity sheets and nature play packs (suspended during Covid, so check at the gift shop to see if these are available).  They also have nature playgrounds and picnic areas to ensure everyone is fueled and has fun.

family weekend getaways in Asheville, fall tree with 3 kids

Asheville Museum of Science: What started at the Southern Appalachia Mineral Society has become Asheville’s children’s museum for hands-on experiential learning.  The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is located in downtown Asheville and is a great way to let kids 3-12 explore astronomy, STEM labs, virtual climate displays, and, of course, gems and minerals.  The museum is open every day of the week except Tuesdays, so make sure to plan accordingly.

Antique Tobacco Barn: Shopping might not be your kids’ favorite thing to do, but the Antique Tobacco Barn is filled with vintage gems and antique goodies.  There are over 77,000 square feet of vendors packed with collectibles, farmhouse chic, vintage clothing, and large architectural features for your home or landscaping.  Make sure to give the barn some time, there is so much to see.  I found a map of the Eastern US from 1840 for my brother-in-law, and I wished I could have bought a lot more, but alas, I had to save the beauties for another day.  The Antique Tobacco Barn is a great place to explore.

family weekend getaway in Asheville, pinball

Pinball Museum: In downtown Asheville, along the Urban Trail is the Asheville Pinball Museum.  It would make a great detour on your walking tour of the city!  This fun and unique hangout is a very popular indoor kid activity in Asheville, especially on cold or rainy days.  For $15 you can spend as long as you like playing 35 pinball machines and 35 vintage video games.  They also offer snacks, sodas, and beer.  This hotspot is super kid-friendly, and it’s a great way to let your kiddos experience “old school” fun.  The museum is closed on Tuesdays for repairs, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying some family fun in Asheville on any other day.

Ride a Train or Trolley:

  • The Craggy Mountain Line is a family-friendly railway that takes visitors on a 7-mile ride through the mountains in an open-air trolley.  Guests have a 30-minute stop at the Woodfin Riverside park for some playtime or picnic lunch before hopping back on the trolley for another 7 scenic miles back to town.  This would be a great family activity to see the fall foliage around Asheville.
  • The Grayline Asheville Trolley is another fun option if you want to get around Asheville.  I know, it’s not a train, but it’s still a fun vehicle!  You can buy the hop-on hop-off tour option and see Asheville while learning new info about the city.  This is a great option if you don’t have a car or you have little ones that might get tired of walking.  They also have ghost tours and Christmas tours, which sound like a special family experience.

Biltmore Estate: The pièce de résistance of a trip to Asheville would have to be the Biltmore Estate.  The largest home in America offers a refined and elegant experience that will awe and inspire young and old alike.  Take the 90-minute self-guided tour with the audio guide to see how this amazing home was built and how the Vanderbilt family lived.  There is an adult and kid guide for the audio.  My six-year-old loved listening to the commentary by Cedric, the Vanderbilt family dog.  But the house is just one part of this extraordinary estate.

Make sure to wander through the formal gardens and conservatory.  There are beautiful shops where the stables used to be that include a Christmas shop, candy shop, and toy shop.  Travel across the estate to Antler Village where you can see the agricultural side.  Children will enjoy the petting area as well as the craftsman demonstrations (the blacksmith is my favorite).

family weekend getaways in Asheville, 3 kids in Biltmore

Parents can treat themselves to a complimentary wine tasting with Biltmore signature wines.  Kids are welcome to join the wine tasting too for some grape juice.  The Biltmore Estate has over 22 miles of hiking trails.  There are bike paths to explore.  There are ongoing art exhibits.  And if that wasn’t enough to keep you busy, there are a host of luxury outdoor experiences to indulge in such as clay shooting, Land Rover rides, and horseback riding.  Biltmore is one of my most favorite places to visit and I think you will love it too.

Outdoors

Golfing: Within Asheville, there are two courses that are public courses.  One is fancy, the Omni Grove Park Inn course.  The other is the city’s municipal course, which has some great reviews and the best rates.  If these aren’t what you’re looking for, then check with some of the other municipal courses in the surrounding cities.  There are several private courses and country club courses but they require memberships.

Cycling: A bicycle ride through the mountains may sound a bit daunting but with electric bikes, you can cruise around without huffing and puffing.

Hiking:  There are so many hiking trails, parks, preserves, and forests to explore in western North Carolina.  The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is less than an hour away from Asheville.  Pisgah National Forest is 40 minutes south of the city.  Mount Mitchel, the highest elevation in the eastern United States, is an hour west of Asheville.  Finally, Chimney Rock State Park is 40 minutes southeast.  Within these parks, there are numerous waterfalls and lookouts.  If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the choices, don’t worry.  Here are two tours that will let you experience the best nature has to offer in the Asheville area.

**Looking for even more places to visit in the Appalachian mountains?  How about Blue Ridge, GA?  Here are 71 Best Activities in Blue Ridge GA with Kids.**

Zip-lines: If you’ve never been ziplining, it is a thrilling ride.  It’s like a roller coaster without the loop-de-loops.  In the forests of Appalachia, there are plenty of adventure parks that have Ropes Courses and zip lines.  These are great for active families with kids who enjoy burning off energy, plus you get to be out in nature.  Here are some family-friendly zip-line experiences.

  • Navitat This has a lot of superlatives: tallest line at 350 feet, longest line at 3,600 feet, and locals’ favorite.
  • The Adventure Center of Asheville– This company is great for thrill-seekers as well as kids.  They have their own kids’ course.  The Asheville Treetops Adventure Part is perfect for families.
  • Canopy Ridge Farm– They offer tandem rides for children under 45 lbs. and as young as 2 years old.
  • French Broad Adventures– This is one-stop shopping for adrenaline excursions in the mountains.  They offer many combo packages that include zip lines.

Fly fishing: Appalachia is known for its clear streams and freshwater trout.  If you have an angler in the family, then try something new and take a guided fly fishing experience.  An experienced fly fishing guide will teach you how to cast, the right lures and the best spots to give you the most successful trip.  Here are several tour guides to choose from.

Whitewater rafting: Going from relaxing to intense, try whitewater rafting for extreme thrills.  This is a great activity for tweens and teens.  This activity is recommended for children ages 10+.  Whitewater rafting in western North Carolina is beautiful.  You will have to travel a little outside of Asheville itself to get to the rapid section of the French Broad River, but it’s only about 45 minutes to get there.  Here are some whitewater rafting companies that offer a variety of options for your water experience.

Horseback Riding: There’s something special about riding a horse.  If you don’t own horses or live around them, then a horseback riding experience can be fun and exciting.  Asheville offers plenty of options for riding the mountain trails as a family.

Apple picking: Nothing says “Fall” like apple picking.  October is the prime season to get your apple spice fix in North Carolina.

  • SkyTop Orchard– This orchard offers U-pick apples as well as packaged varieties.  They have children’s play areas, animals to feed, gem mining, and hayrides.  Most importantly…they have The. Best. Doughnuts.  I’m not kidding.  They make apple cider doughnuts fresh all day.  Once they come out of the fryer they are coated with cinnamon sugar and popped right into your container.  They are warm, spicy, and delicious.  Go for the doughnuts and buy some apples while you are there.

what to eat: kid friendly Asheville restaurants

breakfast

Vortex Doughnuts– They have the most amazing doughnuts in all kinds of crazy creative flavors.  Make sure to check them out for breakfast or a tasty treat!

Hole Doughnuts– These guys supposedly have the best doughnuts in town.  We tried to go get some and they were all sold out.  They have 4 simple flavors that sound scrumptious.

Biscuit Head– There’s not much that can be bad when there’s biscuits.  Biscuit Head has come up with every flavor combination you can think of to enjoy these comforting carbohydrates.

Sunny Point Cafe– Breakfast all day and done well.  Sunny Point Cafe also serves dinner and tasty desserts.  Make sure to check out their specials and deals of the day.

lunch

Chai Pani– Located right downtown (near the flat iron statue), Chai Pani serves Indian street food that is delicious.  Warm and comforting curry with smooth and sweet mango lassis is what my husband and I enjoyed when we stopped in for lunch.

Corner Kitchen– This quaint little house serves up elegant farm-to-table cuisine.   When we visited, just like President Obama back in 2010, we enjoyed the crab and corn chowder and the charcuterie board.  Both were rich and tasty, and there are more dishes that I want to try next time I visit, like the boozy french toast and CK shrimp and grits.

Farm Burger– Burgers, fries, and a milkshake.  But this place has pimento cheese fries, the Sunnyside up burger (with bacon and an egg), and rooter floats.  Oh, and there’s the superfood salad if you want something super healthy.

White Duck Taco– I’m a big fan of tacos that think outside the beef/chicken box.  I love original unique flavors, and White Duck Taco fits the bill (haha, bill, duck, get it?).  With flavors like Lump Crab, Korean Beef Bulgogi, and Lamb Gyro there’s a world of tastes to experience.

family weekend getaway in Asheville, Corner Kitchen

dinner

12 Bones Smokehouse– BBQ is a crowd-pleaser.  With smoked ribs, pulled pork, and roast chicken, 12 Bones Smokehouse will satisfy everyone’s cravings.  They also have their own brewery to go with their BBQ.

Jettie Rae’s Oyster House– I wasn’t sure about oysters before I went to Jettie Rae’s, but I thought, what the heck, why not!  So we got several different varieties and they were on point!  I particularly liked the mignonette sauce that I haven’t had elsewhere.  I also loved the Blue Cheese Potato Chips, yum.  Go, eat oysters, have a drink, and eat potato chips (or anything else on the menu), you’ll thank me later.

Twisted Laurel– Pizza, pasta, and Mediterranean goodness.

The Stable Cafe– If you are at the Biltmore enjoying the day, stay for a meal at the Stable Cafe.  There are other restaurants on the estate ranging from fancy to over-the-counter deli.  The Stable Cafe offers southern cooking with Appalachian-infused cuisine.

breweries

family weekend getaway in Asheville, highland brewery logo

Sierra Nevada– They offer many varieties of beer to fit any taste.  Ever heard of hard Kombucha?  Me neither, but they have it.

Wicked Weed– If you go to the BrewPub, grab a burger and enjoy a flight of their various beers to sample.

Noble Cidery– This is on my list of places to visit next time I’m in Asheville.  Ciders are my husband’s favorite.  This cider has many different fruit flavors and there is also mead, which is made from honey.  After an apple cider doughnut at SkyTop, some Noble cider rounds out your apple-themed weekend.

Highland Brewing Company– Highland is the oldest modern brewery in Asheville, established in 1994 and you can find Highland beer all throughout the southeast.  They offer a taproom in downtown Asheville at the S&W Market food hall.

dessert

French Broad Chocolate– If you love chocolate, don’t miss out on this Asheville landmark.  Located right downtown, the French Broad Chocolate Lounge has locally made chocolates and every other chocolate delicacy.  We had to stand in line for an hour one night to be able to get in, but it was worth it.  They have several other locations around town if the kiddos can’t hold out in the line.  Or how about a chocolate factory tour?  That’s like, every person’s dream, right?

Old European Pastries– Eclairs, and macarons, and custard tarts, Oh my!  For almost 30 years, this Hungarian-based pastry shop has created elegant and luscious desserts for Asheville residents and tourists to savor.

Sunshine Sammies– Gourmet ice cream sandwiches.  These are not your typical vanilla rectangles smooshed between two chocolate cardboards.  Build your own unique ice cream sandwich cookie to enjoy with their small batch flavors and local ingredients.

The Hop– This is another ice cream restaurant that won’t disappoint.  They offer tried and true favorites like chocolate and vanilla, but they also rotate through new varieties like Lavender Vanilla and Bees Knees.  They also have vegan ice cream, which is dairy free to help accommodate those with food allergies.  Did a mention they have doggie sundaes?

The Gourmet Chip Company– Is anyone else like me and likes to try the random flavor chips at grocery stores like Aldi?  The Gourmet Chip Company isn’t a dessert place, but as far as unique snacks are concerned this place qualifies.  Crispy Kettle style potato chips with flavors like the Napa, the Nori, and the Belgium (yep, this one has dark chocolate and caramel so I guess it is a dessert place) make me want to stock up on snacks for the drive home.

where to stay: family weekend in Asheville

hotels & family resorts

Biltmore– For a luxury experience stay on the Biltmore Estate in one of their three accommodations: the Village Hotel, the Inn, or the Cottages.

Grove Park Inn– Another luxury choice would be the Omni Grove Park Inn which offers a spa and an award-winning golf course.  At Christmas, they feature a gingerbread house competition, which is worth viewing whether you stay on-site or not.

Hotels.com– If you’re looking for something a little more friendly on the budget, Hotels.com can help you compare prices of hotels in the Asheville area.  They also let you know if certain hotels are family-friendly.

Travelocity.com– Not only do they have rates for local hotels, they also offer car rentals if you need one for your weekend getaway in Asheville.  And while you’re there, check out the airfare because they have that too.

vrbo

A great family option while staying in Asheville is to rent a VRBO property.  In Asheville, there are many detached apartments and basement-floor suite rentals that work great for family getaways.  You can search for the specifics that fit your family’s size, budget, and needs.

camping

Asheville East KOA– This popular camping chain has a campground along the river in the Blue Ridge mountains, just 15 minutes from downtown Asheville.  They offer RV sites, tent sites, and cabins.  They also have fun activities for the kids such as Gaga Ball, a swimming pool, and tubing.

Lake Powhatan Campground– Located 10 minutes from Asheville, Lake Powhatan Campground has warm showers, full hook-up sites, and plenty of nature to enjoy.  There is also a ‘glamping’ section available.

Mount Pisgah Campground– This state park is a great place to experience the wonders of Appalachia.

Emberglow Outdoor Resort– This place has something cool for everyone.  Located 1 hour from Asheville and near Lake Lure, Emberglow has unique accommodations and family-friendly activities.  Tent and RV sites are available or you could try a yurt, safari tent, treehouse, glamping pod, or vintage trailer for the night.  Sleeping in the trees sounds like a fun experience to me.
